Employee Training Grants

An often overlooked source of capital in your business can be obtaining State Workforce grants to train your employees.

These grants DO vary by state but many of them are wide-ranging and may cover more than you'd imagine.  If you are already training your employees or you plan to invest in employee growth, it is worth exploring these programs.

    Examples of items that workforce grants could cover:

    • Leadership training
    • "EOS" training
    • Physical skills training
    • Computer based training
    • Financial trainings

    The world of grants can be quite overwhelming and unfortunately, there is not a great place that concisely lists out the Workforce Training Grants by state.  The Anomaly team has reached out to some states and also found information on specific states that you may find helpful.  When in doubt, it is best practice to search for "XYZ Workforce Development" and you'll likely find the website for the specific state.

    Here are some of the states we have identified:


    1. Alabama: Grants are available through the Alabama Department of Commerce and other organizations.
    2. California: The Employment Training Panel (ETP) provides funding to employers to assist in upgrading the skills of their workers.
    3. Florida: Quick Response Training (QRT) grants.
    4. Georgia: Quick Start Training Program.
    5. Illinois: Employ Illinois and other grant programs.
    6. Indiana: Skills Enhancement Fund.
    7. Iowa: The Iowa Economic Development Authority offers various grants.
    8. Kentucky: Bluegrass State Skills Corporation (BSSC) grant programs.
    9. Louisiana: Incumbent Worker Training Program (IWTP) and Small Business Employee Training Program (SBET).
    10. Maryland: EARN Maryland program.
    11. Massachusetts: Workforce Training Fund Program (WTFP). This is probably the BEST of all programs.  You can receive up to $20,000 per employee!  In fact, a business <100 employees could receive up to $200k per year for training their employees.
    12. Michigan: Michigan New Jobs Training Program.
    13. Minnesota: Minnesota Job Skills Partnership.
    14. Mississippi: Workforce Enhancement Training Fund.
    15. Missouri: Missouri Works Training program.
    16. New Jersey: Various programs through the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
    17. New York: Several initiatives such as the Workforce Development Initiative.
    18. North Carolina: Customized Training Program.
    19. Ohio: Ohio TechCred and other workforce programs appear to be available. 
    20. Oklahoma: Training for Industry Program (TIP).
    21. Pennsylvania: WEDnetPA provides training through various programs.
    22. South Carolina: ReadySC program.
    23. Tennessee: Incumbent Worker Training Program.
    24. Texas: The Skills Development Fund and other programs.
    25. Virginia: Customized workforce solutions through Virginia's Community Colleges.
    26. Washington: Job Skills Program (JSP).
    27. Wisconsin: Wisconsin Fast Forward (WFF) program.

    Other Information:

    If you do receive grants for training your employees, the grants WILL be taxable at the Federal level.  State taxability varies.

    Next Steps:

    If you are interested in pursuing a state grant to train employees, the first step would be to check out the state web pages for their Workforce development to see if you could possible qualify.  

    Next, you'll likely need some financial data (ask the Anomaly team for help) and basic tax data (entity type, EIN etc).

    Alternatively, there are specialized companies that exist that will navigate the grant process for you...in exchange for a % of the grant received.  However - from our experience, most business owners should be able to navigate the grants on their own. 

    The hardest part is figuring out if there are any grants that you qualify for in your state!
