      Hours/Plan for Availability by Level:

      • Elementary- 7:15-3:00

      • Middle School- 8:00-3:45

      • High School- 7:30-3:15


      Exclusions for Undesignated Medication Availability: 

      • Parents/Guardians/Community Members/Anyone else that is not a District 100 Student or Employee

      • Any Athletic Events or school sponsored events outside of the designated hours listed above

      • Under the care or supervision their parent/guardian or another designated organization

      • Non- School Sponsored Activities (even when the nurse is present)

      Suspected Case

      If there is a suspected case of anaphylaxis, instruct someone to call 911 immediately.

      Act/Dosage

      • Act quickly. It is safer to give epinephrine than to delay treatment. This is a life and death decision.

      • Determine the proper dose and administer epinephrine. Note the time.

      Monitoring

      • Stay with the person until emergency medical services arrives
      • Monitor their airway and breathing
      • Reassure and calm the person as needed.

      Communication

      • Call Nurse/Admin/Front Office Personnel and advise them of the situation.
      • Direct someone to call parent/guardian.

      Continued Symptoms

      • If symptoms continue and EMS is not on the scene, administer a second dose of epinephrine 5 to 15 minutes after the initial injection.  Note the time.
      • Administer CPR if needed.
      • EMS to transport individual to the emergency room.  Document individual's name, date, and time the epinephrine was administered on the used epinephrien auto-injector and give to EMS to accompany individual to the emergency room.
      • If parent is unable to get to the ER right away a designated school administrator should go with EMS to the hospital until the parent arrives.
      • Contact Central Office.

      Symptoms Subside

      • Even if symptoms subside, 911 must still response and individual must be evaluated by a physician.  (A delayed secondary reaction may occur).

      Documentation/Next Steps

      • Document the incident and complete the District Level Incident/Accident Report.
      • Contact the Nursing Coordinator to replace epinephrine stock medication. 
      • Student will not be allowed to remain at school or return to school on the day epinephrine is administered.
      • Within 24 hours of administration of the undesignated epinephrine auto-injector, the school nurse (or administration) must notify the physician who provided the standing protocol or prescription for the undesignated epinephrine auto-injector of its use.
      • Within 3 days after the administration of an undesignated epinephrine auto-injector by a school nurse, trained personnel or student, the school nurse or administration must report the use to the ISBE by completing the Undesignated Epinephrine Reporting Form.
