      Run, Hide or Fight

In order to give yourself a greater chance at survival, prepare mentally.
Create plans to prepare for a variety of situations. If you’ve thought things through and created plans, it can eliminate that shocking moment where you freeze and question “What do I do?”

      RUN
      • If it’s safe to do so or you have no other option, flee the scene. Leave behind personal belongings and encourage others in danger to also run.
      • Before running, take into account the location of the assailant, the age of your students, and your building and its surroundings.
      • Some buildings are surrounded by wide open spaces. Be aware of your surroundings and determine if running is a safe option.
      • If you run into the police, stop running, show your hands and follow directions.

      HIDE
      • If you can, secure in place in your classroom or other space.
      • Make sure the door is locked.
      • Engage your classroom Nightlock device.
      • Barricade the door using larger items first and then smaller ones.
      • Move out of site.
      • Silence your phones.
      • Be quiet.
      • Don’t open the door. The police will open it. Once you identify the police are at your door, follow their instructions.
      • If you are in the hallway and the assailant isn’t in your immediate area, run away from danger.
      • If you can find a safe place to hide and secure, do so.
      • Barricade the door if possible.
      • If you can’t find a safe place to hide and secure in the building, leave the building and run until you find a safe place.

      FIGHT
      • As an absolute last resort, fight back using nearby objects as weapons.
      • Work together and use the element of surprise to your advantage.
      • Swarm the assailant in a group.
      • Focus on controlling arms and legs.
      • Try to keep weapons pointed away from you and other people.
      • If you disarm the assailant, be aware he/she may have more weapons.
      • Do not hold onto the weapon.
      • The police could mistakenly identify you as the assailant.
      • If you have control of the assailant, restrain him/her until the police arrive.
      • Follow the instructions of the police.
