Head Lice Staff Notification

1Notification to Staff
As part of our commitment to maintaining a healthy and conducive learning environment, we would like to inform you about the Belvidere Community School District #100's head lice policy and procedures.
District 100 procedures comply with the Illinois State Law and guidelines proposed by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Center for Disease Control (CDC), National Association of School Nursing (NASN) and The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to maximize students’ academic performance while minimizing absences due to unnecessary exclusion.
When a suspected head lice case is present,
Call the school nurse and send the student to be examined by the nurse.
If head lice are present, the nurse will communicate with the parent/guardian and provide education and review treatment options.
Students can remain in school until the end of the day, with the expectation that parents will provide treatment at home.
Avoid sharing items that come in contact with the hair of the infested student.
The school nurse will assess the child for effectiveness of treatment the following day.
If treatment is ineffective, the nurse will then communicate with parents/guardians for additional treatment recommendations.
If live lice or nits persist, the student remains in school, and parents/guardian will be notified to discuss the treatment regimen.
Educational resources on head lice causes, treatment, and misconceptions will be available in the school nursing office.
School staff shall maintain the privacy of students identified as having head lice.
Your cooperation in adhering to these procedures is crucial for the successful implementation of our head lice policy. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school nurse.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Health Services
