06.50 E1 Nutrition Guidelines
Summary:
Food Service operations within the Belvidere CUSD 100 school cafeterias will continue to provide nutritious, well balanced meals under the required guidelines of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program (NSBLP) and governance of ISBE and the USDA. “Nutri-Kids” software program will be used to manage and monitor menus and product selections. In addition, new ingredients, products, marketing, and recipes will continue to be introduced as part of NSBLP to enhance our program and compliment related elements of our Nutrition and Wellness Policy.
A la Carte, snack and ‘extra’ food selections’ availability within our food service venues will continue to be drastically modified to target newer standards and practices of our nutrition and wellness policy.
The following summarizes nutritional standards for our food service venues:
Elementary Schools

A la Carte food items
Calories from total fat must be at or below 35%.
Calories from saturated fat must be at or below 10%.
Total sugar must be at or below 35% by weight.
Portion size on individual ala carte items will not exceed 200 calories, or, can not exceed the serving size and nutrient levels if the same item is served under the National School Lunch Program/School Breakfast guidelines.
A la Carte food items will only be offered once per week and will be at the principal’s discretion. Extra entrees will not be offered on a daily basis.
A la Carte beverages items
Non-Carbonated: 100% juice products, Plain Bottled Water, 1% Milk (White/Choc) and Skim Milk

Additionally, at all levels, transformation and introductions of whole grain and wheat based products will continue. Wheat pizza crust will be available as an alternative to traditional enriched flour product. Wheat breads, rolls will be used for deli and sandwich items. Secondary Schools will scale back use of deep fryers, and phase-out completely by 2008.
