Membership (eligibility criteria)
The Section Committee will have a trainee representative from each of the 18 deaneries within the four nations.
The Committee will be responsible for ensuring that the section meets its strategic objectives.
The appointment term for committee membership is 2 years. A minimum term of 1 years (from the proposed start of term, generally the summer conference of the year of election) is required for candidates to be eligible for election.
The Treasurer and Secretary will be elected from the membership of the Committee and will each serve 1 year. Their membership term will be extended to 3 years with an opportunity to be elected as chair in their final year.
Members who lead on one of the key events within the committee can extend their term duration to 3 years at the discretion of the chair.
Members terms can also be extended at the discretion of the chair to account for relative absences due to sickness/secondment/parental leave etc.
The Chair can co-opt additional members to join the Committee at their own discretion in exceptional cases such as parental leave, long-term sickness or elected trainees transferring out of deanery. Co-opted members are expected to cover some of the duties of the elected representatives with support from the TS.
Co-opted members will be ‘task and time limited’ to respect the democratic election process within the Society. Co-opted members should not be granted ongoing roles within the Committee after the timebound task for which they have been co-opted.
They should be selected through an open and fair process (from the same deanery of the representative they are covering for). A record of co-opted members should be presented to the Committee and members should be stood down once their task is completed.
The Chair from the previous year will continue to support the committee in an ex-officio capacity for 1 year.
The committee will be supported by 2 Internal Medical Trainee (IMT) and 2 Foundation Year (FY) members. Each is appointed for a 2 year period. The role of these members is to provide a voice for future Gastroenterology trainees.
Potential IMT members should have at least one year remaining prior to potentially starting a Higher Speciality Training post in Gastroenterology. Application process is as laid out in the TS election process document. Selection of appointed applicants is by the current TS chair, with support from the executive team, and their decision is final.
