Scope | The BSG Young Gastroenterologist of the Year – Clinical & Translational Science is designed to identify and promote talented trainee clinical scientists nationally in order to promote research and science in gastroenterology for the future. |
Criteria | The award is open to any BSG member who is training in gastroenterology in the UK. This includes members of the BSG Trainees Section Committee not directly involved in the organisation of the award. Applications are welcomed from doctors in LAT posts as well as those in numbered posts. |
Conditions of the Award | The successful applicant must submit a short report (300-500 words) to the Trainees' Section within 12 months of the award. The report should include a summary of the work undertaken and an outline of the results.
The successful applicant must attend the plenary session of the BSG Annual Meeting for receipt of the award. |
Timeline – advertising | Opens 6 months prior to the Annual Meeting at the same time as the other Trainees and CSSC awards. Closes 4 months before, with reviewing completed around 3-4 weeks after, suggested timetable below. |
Scoring Criteria | All candidates to be scored across the following categories. A free text box is available for judges to add additional notes or feedback comments that could be shared with the applicant on request. In the event of a tie, you may be requested to review applications with your fellow judges.
- Personal research skills (Score 1-5 –0= no evidence of research to 5 demonstrated a significant amount of research, including individuality of concepts and ideas, contribution to attributable academic achievements)
- Research innovations for benefit of patients (Score 1-5 –0= not evidenced to 5 demonstrated a significant benefit to patients)
- Research partnerships and collaborations (Score 1-5 –0= no evidence to 5 examples of partnerships with external stakeholders/patients)
- Engaging others in the research field (Score 1-5 –0= no evidence to 5 significant engagement of others though articles, teaching, courses and journal reviewing etc)

- Describe any experience of working in partnership with clinical partners, external stakeholders and/or coproduction with patients
- Give details of wider working in the field e.g. relevant positions held, grant applications, grant & journal reviewing
- Provide details of dissemination & engaging others in research work e.g. book chapters, articles, papers, teaching, presentations and course development.
