 Scope
Honorary appointment for 4 years; first 2 years as Deputy Vice President, followed by 2 years as Vice President. The Vice President is a member of the BSG Board of Trustees.

Approximate time commitment of 2 PA.
 Overall Purpose of the JobTo be the leader within the BSG on matters relating to hepatology (policy, clinical service, research, education and training), supporting the President on key matters and decisions in this area of the specialty. The individual will be a senior member of the BSG Executive and will lead BSG engagement and interaction with partner Societies such as BASL and EASL
 

KEY OBJECTIVES

  • The Vice President Hepatology provides leadership for hepatology-related activities of the Society.
  • The Vice President Hepatology is a member of the BSG Board of Trustees.
  • The Vice President Hepatology attends and contributes to the BSG’s key committees; Executive, Council and Strategy Meetings and leads the activities of the BSG Liver section.
  • The Vice President Hepatology Chairs the BSG Liver Section to set direction on matters of importance to hepatology services, research, education and training.
  • To represent the BSG externally in multiple stakeholder bodies such as NICE, NHS in each of the four nations and other professional bodies (BASL and EASL).
  • The Deputy Vice President will support the Vice President and deputise on their behalf when required.

MAIN DUTIES, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To lead strategic direction and priorities of the BSG relating to hepatology.
  • To be a registered Trustee of the BSG with the Charity Commission and attend BSG Trustee Board meetings in the role of Vice President Hepatology.
  • To Chair the Liver Section Committee meetings.
  • To attend BSG Executive and Council meetings.
  • To liaise with the BSG executive and key Committees on hepatology matters.
  • To work closely with the BSG Chief Executive and BSG office staff on the administration of the Liver Section and matters relating to hepatology.
  • To report at regular intervals to BSG Trustees Board, BSG Council and the BSG membership on the hepatology-related activities of the Society (reports, newsletters etc).
  • To attend and represent BSG on the BASL Committee in an ex officio capacity.
  • To represent the BSG externally as required.
  • To communicate professionally, effectively and accurately on behalf of the BSG, both verbally and in written form with a wide variety of persons and act as a spokesperson for the BSG with media as required.
  • Other matters as determined from time to time by BSG Trustees, Council or Executive.

Clinical/Service Achievements/experienceMedically Qualified (MB, ChB or MD)
Consultant level or equivalent standing of at least five years in hepatology
At least five years membership of BSG & in good standing
Evidence of active participation or association with BSG
Recent experience in clinical service delivery in hepatology
Affiliation with a relevant Royal College or professional body and a valid registration with an appropriate licencing authority
Higher level qualification e.g. PhD, MD, MSc
FRCP or equivalent
Familiarity with GMC/GCP good medical practice
Established relationshipsPrevious experience as Chair, Secretary or executive member of Committee or Council or Section of the BSGSimilar experience of other Societies or National Committees would be an advantage
Track record in Education/Training or Research including publication or guideline involvement
Personal QualitiesEvidence of Leadership skills or effective roles
Horizon of 3-5 years for matters relevant to the BSG
Evidence of Strategic development or implementation
